Not sure if you figured this out, but I wanted to reply for you and anyone else having this issue. I racked my brain for a couple of days over this one, even looking through the source code of the plugin… Anyway, I finally got smart and found the solution:
In the News Manager settings, under “News Features Support”, the Editor option must be turned on.
I really felt stupid… I didn’t know that’s what “editor” meant. I thought it was the PERSON editing, not the text editor itself.
These options should REALLY be explained better.
